What about my spouse’s “free will choice”?
While it is true that God has given each person a “free will choice”, that does not mean that God just ignores them and lets them do whatever they want without doing anything about it. God does not force people to make a certain choice, but he will woo, draw, prod, corral, spank, use other people, circumstances, plagues, etc. to “help” them make the right choice. Yes, it is true that people have a “free will choice”, but in the end, God always wins! PTL! There are many examples in scripture of how God works with people to “help” them make the right choices. Let’s look at just a few of them.
Look at the verse below:
Proverbs 21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.
Think about this. If God has the heart of “kings” in His hand and turns them “wherever” He wishes….how much more do you think He has the heart of you spouse, who is “one flesh” with you in His hands? And how much more can He turn the heart of your “one flesh” mate wherever He wishes? Especially if you are standing for your marriage! A marriage that is an unbreakable covenant between you, your spouse and God himself! In addition to that…God says that He HATES divorce…and…what God has joined together let not man separate!
Now let’s look at the story of Jonah. You’ll find this story in the book of Jonah, starting at chapter 1. I’ll paraphrase. God told Jonah to go preach to the people in the city of Nineveh. Jonah replies, “I don’t think so”, and gets on a ship to go the other direction. That was his free will choice, and God allowed Jonah to make that choice and to carry it out. Right? Well, yes He did…but. Then God caused a great storm to come and the ship was about to sink because of the storm. Then end up throwing Jonah overboard and God spoke to a great fish (not a whale as most people think…the Bible says it was a great “fish”…whales are mammals not fish, but that’s another topic) and caused it to swallow Jonah. After three days in the belly of the fish Jonah was vomited out onto the beach. And God again told him to go preach to the people of Nineveh. Jonah still had a “free will choice”, but this time when God spoke to him, he saw things a bit differently! Thus, his “free will choice”, the second time God spoke to him to go preach to the people of Nineveh, Jonah’s “free will choice” was to be obedient to what God had told him to do. But it WAS Jonah’s “free will choice”!
Need another one? Ok. How about pharaoh, the king of Egypt? You will find this story in the book of Exodus starting in chapter 7. Again, I’ll do some paraphrasing. God tells Moses to tell pharaoh to let the children of Israel leave the land of Egypt. Like Jonah, pharaoh says, “I don’t think so”! So God sends a plague on the land of Egypt and turns all the water of the land into blood. Ten times God tells pharaoh to let His people leave the land of Egypt…and nine times pharaoh says, “I don’t think so”! But on the last time, after the last convincing plague, pharaoh “comes around to God’s way of thinking” and lets the people go. Again, pharaoh made a “free will choice” to be obedient to what God wanted him to do. Pharaoh could have still refused to let the people go even after the tenth plague…but he decided that God’s way wasn’t such a bad idea after all!
Now think about this. Pharaoh was an ungodly king and had no covenant with God or the people of Israel, and yet God brought him to a place where he was willing to be obedient to God’s will. Your spouse in bound by a covenant (the covenant of marriage) with God and you, and in many of your cases, your spouse is also a believer in Jesus Christ! Oh what hope you should have in what God will do in your marriage!
Yes, every human on this earth has a “free will choice”, given to them by God Himself, but in the end…God ALWAYS wins! We just have to stand firm on His word and walk by faith and not by sight! When things don’t look like we think they should look or don’t go the way we think they should go, look at your situation with the eyes of faith…faith in what your God can and will do for you!
